The comune was created in 2019 by merging Lu and Cuccaro Monferrato. While it stood alone, Lu shared with Ne, Re and Vo' the record for the shortest name of any Italian municipality; the name comes from lucus, Latin for a sacred wood, and early documents call the hill Lugo, Luco, Luh. The old coat of arms carried a moon, put there for the sound of it.
At Cuccaro some studies hold that members of Christopher Columbus's family lived there and were its lords: the comune took their coat of arms and gave them a museum. On the ridge climbing towards Lu stands the small white church of the Madonna della Neve.
