Vignale Monferrato

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,068 · Postal code: 15049

Vignale appears in a diploma of Frederick Barbarossa dated 1164. The counts Callori were the last to hold the fief, until the nineteenth century; their palace, built in the fifteenth and enlarged in the eighteenth, drops to the garden by a broad stair and now holds the Enoteca Regionale del Monferrato.

San Bartolomeo, raised between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, crowns the ridge with its monumental front and columned porch; the yard to the west opens onto the Monferrato hills. Inside are frescoes by Luigi Morgari and a sixteenth-century crucifix; the Beata Vergine Addolorata is older, of the fifteenth.
