Frassineto Po

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,471 · Postal code: 15040

Frassineto Po lies in the lower Monferrato, on the Po. Its parish belonged to the diocese of Milan until 1804 and moved to that of Casale only two years later. The town arms show a green ash tree on silver between two purple stags, under a gold double-headed eagle with two crowns.

In 1812 Archbishop Vincenzo Maria Mossi had a neoclassical palace built by Agostino Vitoli, an architect brought from Spoleto: its east wing now houses the Book Village and two floors a museum on the Po landscape. Facing the square is the church of the Madonna degli Angeli, its pale pedimented front carrying stucco swags and two statues in niches.
