Morbello

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 408 · Postal code: 15010

Morbello, Mirbé in Piedmontese, lies in the Upper Monferrato, in the province of Alessandria; a tenth-century document already names it. In 1233 it submitted to the Republic of Genoa, and the holding was later shared with the Malaspina; in 1708 it passed instead into the orbit of the marquisate of Monferrato.

The ruins of the castle stand above the hamlet of Morbello Piazza: built in the twelfth century, held by several Genoese families, destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly from the seventeenth, it survives above all as a squared block of masonry. The Marocco and Ciglione towers are ruins too, and at Costa the church of San Rocco dates from about the eleventh century, heavily altered since.
