In the Middle Ages it was written Puncone. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the village and its castle headed the marquisate of Ponzone, held by a branch of the Aleramici; the Provençal troubadour Raimbaut de Vaqueiras stayed there and spoke of it in his verse. In 1646 the Spanish had castle and village walls pulled down; only archaeological traces are left.
That castle survives in the coat of arms: azure, a castle of three embattled towers rising from a grassy plain, with three five-pointed stars above. Ponzone is not one village either, but a scatter of hamlets on the hills — Toleto, Ciglione, Cimaferle, Piancastagna, Caldasio — almost to the Ligurian border.
