Cassinelle

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 937 · Postal code: 15070

Cassinelle sits on a hill in the Ovada country, between the Amione and Caramagna valleys. In 1284 Tommaso Malaspina had to rule whether the grazing at Bandita belonged to Morbello or to Cassinelle, and gave it to Cassinelle; Bandita is still its hamlet, filling each summer with holidaymakers from Genoa.

The church of San Defendente, also the parish church of Santa Margherita, began as a shrine to the Madonna of Loreto; the right aisle holds what are believed to be the saint's relics, brought from Rome in 1742. A tower on the arms recalls a castle pulled down in the nineteenth century, under the shields of the Spinola and Gentile, lords here.
