Cremolino

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,062 · Postal code: 15010

The name appears as Cremenna in a tenth-century document. The village sits on a ridge of the Alto Monferrato, the castle on its point. A marriage brought in the Malaspina, and the town arms still carry their mark: a rampant lion reversed on red, gripping the dry thorn in its forepaws.

Outside the village stands the Bruceta sanctuary, built in the ninth century, long a place of pilgrimage. It is named for the Madonna painted on stone that it keeps, saved from the fire that destroyed the earlier chapel; in 1918 Benedict XV granted it a plenary indulgence. Pale stone walls, a brick bell tower, a small round porch at the door.
