Feast of Saint Lawrence
📅 Every year, on 10 August
On 10 August Cavatore, a municipality of 301 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates its patron Saint Lawrence (san Lorenzo).
Cavatore is first named on 20 April 996, in a diploma by which the emperor Otto III granted the village, with other settlements of the Ligurian Apennines, to Primo, bishop of Acqui. Under the bishops it gained a watchtower, two rings of walls and a castle, and became one of their main strongholds between the Erro and Visone valleys; a third wall followed in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In 1383 the diocese passed it, with other fiefs, to the Malaspina.
Of the castle only the tower is left, the oldest medieval tower in the area: square in plan, of carefully squared stone, with no ornament at the top. That bareness and the plainness of the whole are what allowed it to be dated to the late twelfth or early thirteenth century. The tower is also the town's coat of arms, silver on blue beneath a gold comet. The oldest church in the comune is the Romanesque one at the cemetery.
