On 24 June Ponzano Monferrato, a municipality of 380 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates its patron Saint John the Baptist.
The coat of arms repays a full reading: on silver, a green cross with Guelph merlons, thirty-two in all, four and four on each arm, the eight at the ends set to trace the crossbar of a tau cross. Above, on red, a black eagle with an antique crown of three points.
Since 1921 the village has lost about three quarters of its people. Its only hamlet is Salabue, whose castle was the seat of the lords of the fief, among them Ignazio Alessandro Cozio, a collector of musical instruments. The road to Serralunga di Crea passes the Sacro Monte di Crea, on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
