Montaldo Bormida

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 708 · Postal code: 15010

In 1164 an imperial diploma called two neighbouring places "Ambo Carpineta": the one that became Carpeneto and this one, then so little known it had no name of its own. Montaldo appears under its own name only from the fourteenth century, and waited until 1863 for a royal decree to let it add Bormida.

The castle had a moat and a drawbridge; when it came down its stones went into the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo, begun in 1686. A keep survives of the walls, and the moat is now a tamburello court. A low porch shelters the door, with San Michele and San Rocco frescoed beside the windows.
