On 2 August Ottiglio, a municipality of 672 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates its patron Saint Eusebius (sant'Eusebio).
The coat of arms says almost everything about Ottiglio: two bunches of grapes, for Barbera and Grignolino, the vines it has lived on, and eight stars, one for each of the feudal families that passed it from hand to hand.
From the fields you take it in at a glance: the houses climb the ridge in steps up to the church at the top, and the vine rows come right up to the first doors. Over the last hundred years Ottiglio has lost three quarters of its people, and the village seen from outside is larger than the one lived in.
