Sala Monferrato

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 377 · Postal code: 15030

Sala stands on a hilltop in the Basso Monferrato, on marine sediments of the Miocene: they give the Pietra da Cantoni, the limestone used for building here since the year one thousand, soft enough to be hollowed into infernòt, the underground cellars for wine. Sala's own was dug by hand by Franciscan friars under the church of San Francesco, finished in 1844.

The village grew around the castle, whose oldest core is Lombard, on the plan of a ricetto. Disputed between the bishops of Asti and Vercelli, in 1164 it passed to the marquisate of Monferrato by Frederick Barbarossa's will. In the early seventeenth century the ducal Maestrato recorded that Sala's wines pleased the Gonzaga court.
