Grazzano Badoglio

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 618 · Postal code: 14035

In 961 Aleramo, first marquis of Montferrat, founded an abbey on the hill and gave it to the Benedictines, who stayed more than four centuries; he put it under the bishop of Turin, away from Vercelli. The church of Santi Vittore e Corona, which took its place, holds Aleramo's tomb.

The complex keeps a Roman funerary stone of the second century, cut for Titus Vettius Hermes, a freedman perfume seller, in his own lifetime: he asks his heirs to bring roses to his tomb on the anniversary of his death and never to divide or sell it. The village, once Grazzano Monferrato, carries the name of Pietro Badoglio, born here in 1871.
