Cereseto

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 457 · Postal code: 15020

Cereseto stands on a hilltop in the Monferrato. Its name settled slowly, through Cirisidum, Cerexeti and Cireseto, and is traced to the cherry trees on the hills around, ciresa in dialect. The earliest document naming it is probably a diploma of Otto III, May 999, with a Graseverto de Cirisido among King Arduin's followers.

The castle above the village is not the old one: the medieval stronghold came down in 1600 and, in the early twentieth century, the industrialist Riccardo Gualino raised a neo-Gothic one designed by the Casale engineer Vittorio Tornielli. The arms hold the cherries of the name, the castle and three chestnut burrs, canting arms of the Ricci di Cereseto.
