Casorzo

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 657 · Postal code: 14032

Until 2022 it was simply Casorzo; then Monferrato was added. The medieval records are patchy: Casurcius in 1148, later Casurtius, Cassurcellus and even Castrum Arsum. Dante Olivieri read into it a shortened compound of casa and a Latin personal name, Ursius or Surtius.

The village splits into upper and lower Casorzo, the higher part on a hill closed by vineyards, and the economy is almost entirely Malvasia. The church of the Madonna delle Grazie is a rotunda ringed with columns, with a dome and a small bell turret, the war memorial in front and grass all round. On the road to Grana Monferrato stands the bialbero, a cherry grown on a mulberry.
