Ponti

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 618 · Postal code: 15010

Ponti stands on the banks of the Bormida, in the Alessandria Monferrato. Its beginnings are placed in pre-Roman times, at the same moment as nearby Acqui, the Aquae Statiellae founded by the Ligurian Statielli, who also settled this stretch of valley.

Under Roman rule the village was called Pontum, after the bridges the Romans threw across the Bormida while opening the via Emilia Scauri; from that road an Antonine column still survives under the portico of the town hall, a Roman road sign. The town's arms are borrowed: they repeat the symbols of the Del Carretto family.
