Feast of Saint George
📅 Every year, on 23 April
On 23 April Montechiaro d'Acqui celebrates its patron Saint George, to whom the town's church is dedicated; on the first Sunday of May the anchovy trade is re-enacted at the «Anciuada der castlan».
Montechiaro d'Acqui comes in two halves: Piana on the floor of the Bormida di Spigno, the old borgo on the hill, on the ridge road to the sea, where a castle stood until the Spanish pulled it down in the seventeenth century. From up there the Erro and Bormida valleys open beyond the roofs and the bell tower of San Giorgio.
Outside Piana lie the ruins of the pieve del Cauro; in old papers the upper borgo is Mons Cauri. The chimney of the old brick kiln still stands at the centre. In the nineteen-thirties the comune was joined to Denice, and by the end of the forties the two had parted.
