Denice

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 190 · Postal code: 15010

At Denice a medieval tower 29 metres high stands on the rise of ground around which the old centre grew: square and slightly trapezoidal in plan, built in the late thirteenth century by the Del Carretto marquesses. Three rows of pointed arches alternating with a saw-tooth cornice run round the top; the original doorway is a pointed arch with architrave, and inside a staircase of a hundred steps leads to the summit, with a view over the village and the Bormida valley.

The tower is in the town's arms too, quartered with those of the families tied to its history: the bends of the Del Carretto, the hammers of the Ponzone and the pales of the Scarampi. The comune itself vanished for a while: in 1929 it was suppressed and its land joined to Montechiaro d'Acqui in the new comune of Montechiaro Denice; Denice became independent again in 1946.
