Castelletto d'Erro

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 150 · Postal code: 15010

Castelletto d'Erro looks down on the via Emilia Scauri, running below the village between the Erro and Bormida valleys: the castle stood there to watch it, and its tower survives, the one on the town's arms, a square tower proper under the chief of Savoy. It belonged to a chain of Acqui-country lookouts, with Roccaverano, Vengore, San Giorgio Scarampi and Terzo.

In 1169 some inhabitants gave the castle and its land to the commune of Alessandria; the fief then followed the bishops of Acqui, the marquises of Monferrato and local lords. Local tradition has the medieval village growing out of the abandonment of nearby Vicus Falmencianus, its people moving into the fortified settlement then called castrum novum. Of the complex, ruined already by the nineteenth century, the tower and a little walling remain: square plan, blind-arch crowning, a raised doorway, barrel vaults inside, one roofing the cistern at the base.
