Monastero Bormida

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,006 · Postal code: 14058

Around 1050 the marquis Aleramo called Benedictine monks from San Benigno Canavese to bring back into cultivation a valley that Saracen raids had left deserted. They built the bell tower, the church, the monastery and the bridge; the castle later grew over the monastery, of which the tower still stands. Until the eighteenth century the village was called Monastero di Santa Giulia.

The Romanesque bridge over the Bormida, humpbacked, with four arches of squared stone, was the only one passable all year up from the lower valley: a toll was paid at the top, and people here still say they have not a penny to cross the Bormida.
