Feast of San Grato di Aosta
📅 Every year, on 7 September
On 7 September Penango, a municipality of 516 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates its patron San Grato di Aosta.
The name ends in -ngo like many Lombard place names, and the small necropolises found here are cited in support; others trace it to the Cimbri, scattered over the Monferrato hills after the defeat at Vercelli. Penango enters the records in 961, when Aleramo gave the monastery of Grazzano two farmsteads «in loco et fundo Penengi».
The village depended on Moncalvo until 1704, when duke Ferdinando Carlo Gonzaga, short of war funds, sold the cantons of Penango, Cioccaro and Patro in fief: from that sale came a separate community. In 1908 Santa Maria and Patro passed to Moncalvo. San Grato, the eighteenth-century parish church, is of bare brick, with two clock faces on its tower.
