Moncalvo

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,184 · Postal code: 14036

Moncalvo was the first capital of the Monferrato: the marquis put his seat here. The title of city had come from the duke of Mantua, and Vittorio Amedeo III confirmed it in 1774; he then granted the town to his son Maurizio Giuseppe, who became its prince.

From the sixteenth century a sizeable Jewish community lived here: in 1731 there were a hundred and seventy-six of them among a little over fifteen hundred inhabitants. The ghetto, unlike almost all others, did not lie away from the main Catholic buildings but in a central area. A ballad of the late nineteenth century survives, "La Gran Battaja dj'Abrei d'Moncalv", written by a Christian townsman in Judaeo-Piedmontese; the community, in decline for centuries, died out after the war and the deportations of 1943.
