Feast of Saint Andrew
📅 Every year, on 30 November
On 30 November Cartosio celebrates its patron Saint Andrew; the town preserves the Torre di Cartosio.
Cartosio sits on a shelf cut by the Erro torrent into the valley floor. Eleventh-century documents call it Cartosium, perhaps from the Ligurian root kart, a clearing or a field: the place of the fields. The valley's first village stood a little to the north-east, was called Borgo, and left the church of San Pietro.
A sandstone tower stands in the middle of the square: seven floors of a single room, linked by corner trapdoors instead of stairs, from the cistern below to the lookout on top. The crenellated parapet came down in 1296 under Asti's militias, and the west wall still shows the opening from which a drawbridge reached the castle, now gone.
