Malvicino

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 84 · Postal code: 15015

Malvicino, Mavzin in Piedmontese, is the least populated municipality of the Alessandria area, and not even one village: its people are scattered across a dozen hamlets, Gramonda, Isola Buona, Pian Gallina, Redimuncè, Saliceto and the rest. The town arms carry a crowned black eagle on gold above a chequy band of black and silver.

The oldest thing stands outside the village. The pieve of San Michele, a monastic foundation perhaps Lombard, appears in a document of 1179 among the churches that Pope Alexander III recognised as dependent on the abbey of San Quintino di Spigno: a single bare-stone hall, a semicircular apse with a double-splayed window, and fragments of a late fifteenth-century Last Judgement. In 1577 the new parish church, same dedication, rose inside the village, and the pieve stayed put.
