Pozzol Groppo

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 365 · Postal code: 15050

Pozzol Groppo is a federation of hamlets on a ridge between the Curone and Staffora valleys, none of which carries the comune's name: the town hall is at San Lorenzo. The name joins two places: Pozzolo, the little well of Latin puteum, probably a spring or trough, and Groppo, the height, the old name of Biagasco, a separate comune until 1928.

Both were under Tortona and in 1155 came to its aid against Frederick Barbarossa; in 1480 the Sforza sent five hundred foot soldiers to punish Pozzolo, accused of being a den of bandits. The Malaspina castle stands where a Roman watchtower once did, and the arms pair a tower with the family's flowering thorn.
