Volpedo

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,212 · Postal code: 15059

Tenth-century charters call the place Vicus Piculus, Vipegulus, Vulpeculus: always a vicus, a Roman village, and the present name follows from it. The first written record is from 966 and names the pieve, still the chief monument: Romanesque, reworked in the fifteenth century, with frescoes attributed to the school of the Boxilio brothers of Tortona.

In 1425 Perino Cameri, a condottiero, gave the fief to the Fabbrica del Duomo of Milan, which left the town wide autonomy. Giuseppe Pellizza was born here, the painter of Il Quarto Stato, who chose to sign himself da Volpedo; and the Volpedo peach takes its name from here, planted early last century after a phylloxera outbreak.
