Alice Bel Colle

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 774 · Postal code: 15010

Alice Bel Colle looks over its vineyards from the eastern side of the Rio Medrio valley, which drains into the Bormida. The village sits at two levels: the old centre on the ridge, houses gathered round the church and its brick bell tower, and, lower down, Borgo Stazione on the valley floor.

The fief was split in two: one half went to Alessandria, which had the rights from the marquises of Occimiano, the other to the marquises of Montferrat, who took all of it in 1278. In 1533 Giovanni Giorgio died, the last of the line, and the village passed to the Gonzaga of Mantua. Vines still rule: moscato, brachetto, barbera, dolcetto, and two growers' cooperatives.
