The village huddles round the castle, which from a low rise commands the road between Casale and Asti. San Giorgio first appears in a diploma of Otto III of 999, confirming to the bishop of Vercelli the district of Sant'Evasio. In 1393 the community below the castle gave itself Statutes, ninety-four chapters of civil and criminal law.
The castle housed the Inquisition's tribunal: during the plague of 1530 some forty people accused of spreading the contagion were tried there, and thirty were sentenced to death. On the entrance door the industrialist who bought it in the twentieth century had a motto carved: everything belonged to others and everything will return to others.
