Feast of Saints Quiricus and Julitta
📅 Every year, on 16 July
On 16 July Cella Monte, a municipality of 528 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates its patrons Saint Quiricus and Saint Julitta (san Quirico e santa Giulitta).
The name is first attested in the twelfth century, as cellae and as cella: probably the wine cells, the infernòt dug into the sandstone where the first houses stood; another theory says small monasteries. Pietra da cantoni is the local stone: where the Miocene sea was shallower, as here, the sediments took up more calcium carbonate and the blocks came out yellowish, harder and more prized.
Palazzo Volta, a parish house of the later seventeenth century, holds the Ecomuseo della Pietra da Cantoni: restoration uncovered the loggia on stone columns on both floors, and to the north the stepped wall that carried the hanging garden still stands.
