Fraconalto

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 352 · Postal code: 15060

Fraconalto lies in the Ligurian Apennines, between the upper Val Lemme and the Scrivia valley, above the Bocchetta pass. The Genoese annals name it in 1121, the year the Republic took the Oltregiogo; later Genoa granted it statutes that let the community elect its consuls, and since the thirteenth century it has belonged to the archdiocese of Genoa.

Until 1927 it was called Fiaccone, a name dropped because it sounded insulting. In 1859 the Rattazzi decree took it from Liguria and gave it to the province of Alessandria; twice in the last century the council asked in vain to return to Genoa, and the boundary with Busalla, at Biscionea, has never been fully settled.
