Agliano Terme

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,673 · Postal code: 14041

The name comes from the Roman Allius and appears in charters from 993 as Alljanus, later Aglanus. To Agliano came Bianca, the daughter the widow of Manfredo I Lancia brought when she remarried here: Frederick II had three children by her; one, Manfredi, succeeded his father in the kingdom of Sicily.

The castle was besieged by the Solaro of Asti early in the fourteenth century, rebuilt by the Guttuari and finally pulled down by the Spanish. In piazza Castello you can still climb the old castellan's tower, now the aqueduct's: bare brick, a crenellated crown, an iron stair up the round flank. San Giacomo Maggiore, the parish church, was rebuilt in 1657 by the whole community.
