Saint Roch, patron of the land of the Confraternity of the Annunziata
📅 Every year, on 16 August
Montegrosso d'Asti celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August.
Five million years ago this was a sea no more than two hundred metres deep; then a plain of pools and marshes, and the fossils record who lived in it: rhinoceroses, mastodons, elephants, hyenas, cheetahs. With the ice age the landscape changed, conifers spread and the mammoth appeared.
The village itself was planned on paper. On 18 January 1198 the commune of Asti granted citizenship to the men of five villages of the val Tiglione, and the right to join together and found a new settlement: by 1205 the villanova was standing. Montegrosso then belonged to the Districtus of the Asti republic, some twenty places that could not be given away as fiefs, until in 1618 the duke, short of money, dissolved it and put them up for sale.
