Moasca

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 470 · Postal code: 14050

Moasca sits on a hill with a wide, flat top between the Belbo and the Nizza. Of the first fortress, razed in 1308 after a long, difficult siege, neither origin nor shape is known. The castle standing today was rebuilt on its ruins in 1351, dated by a puzzling inscription over the gate.

The cellar filled the whole basement, with tunnels below it used as prisons. The coat of arms carries a red tower with five Guelph merlons, a crowned lion and three wolf heads, under the motto Virtute et consilio. San Pietro, the parish church, is late seventeenth century, like San Rocco's brick chapel, with bell tower and portico.
