Calosso

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,331 · Postal code: 14052

Calosso stands on a hill between the Nizza and Tinella valleys, the highest village in the diocese of Asti. Its name comes from the Roman family name Callocius. It first appears in a deed of 960, where one Arimanno de Calocio witnesses an exchange of land made by Bishop Brunengo.

The castle above the village was destroyed by the Guelph Solaro in 1318 and rebuilt at once; after the Peace of the Pyrenees in 1659 the Roero turned it into a country house, and the round tower and the ricetto arch remain. At San Bovo a pink chapel opens its porch onto the road, with a bell in the gable.
