Castelnuovo Calcea

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 765 · Postal code: 14040

In Piedmontese the village is Castelneuv Brusà, the burnt castle: the nickname comes from a real fire, set by the Duke of Savoy's troops, which destroyed both village and castle. The official name joins the Latin Castrum Novum to an ad calcarias, probably explained by the Roman road to Nizza, which crossed marshy ground and needed constant shoring up.

Of the castle, rebuilt on its present site by the Marquis of Incisa after an earlier destruction and later left to fall in by private owners, there remain the round brick tower and a stretch of wall, now a public park. Angelo Brofferio, poet and lawyer, was born here in 1802.
