Feast of San Giovanni Battista
📅 Every year, on 24 June
On 24 June Cantarana, a municipality of 1,023 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates its patron San Giovanni Battista.
The place name is probably Celtic and speaks of water: at Bonoma a field of springs feeds several aqueducts. In the sixteenth century the valley turned to marsh and people moved up to the Torrazzo; a century later the parish church, then dedicated to Saint Dorothy, drew a small centre back down below.
The coat of arms records a misreading: the old one, of the Malabayla who held the place, was indented in red and silver; the first mayor after fascism, Cesare Novara, read hills into it, and the shield now shows three, cultivated. Beside the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, the bell tower rebuilt in 1914 is among the tallest in the province.
