Feast of the Madonna del Carmine and San Michele
📅 Every year, on the last Sunday of July
On the last Sunday of July Maretto, a municipality of 405 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates its patrons the Madonna del Carmine and San Michele.
Maretto (Marèj in Piedmontese) lies on the Monferrato hills near Villafranca d'Asti. Its coat of arms explains the name: an apple tree, with an inscription beneath recalling the older form Maletum, “apple orchard”. The azure border and the lilies of France recall the county of Asti under the Orléans, and then the kings of France.
The village core gathers around the brick parish church, the clock on its bell tower. A few steps away stands the confraternity church of Santa Croce, its first stone laid on 22 November 1686, consecrated on 14 December 1689. From Rome came a relic of the Cross, a wood fragment in a silver reliquary kept behind the high altar.
