Feast of Sant'Agostino
📅 Every year, on 28 August
On 28 August Ferrere, a municipality of 1,602 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates its patron Sant'Agostino.
Ferrere first appears in 1034 as Ferraria, among the holdings of the counts of Pombia. The village lies scattered over hills with saints' names: San Giuseppe is the highest, San Secondo the largest. In 1630 a ruinous flood and then the plague broke the valley floor, and many moved up to the heights, settling there and making hamlets that still stand.
San Secondo comes back in the church that rises above the trees, with its brick bell tower, a clock with two faces and a lantern on top. On the hill of San Defendente stands Castelrosso, the Garretti villa, castle-shaped but undefended, where Rita Levi Montalcini spent much of her youth with an uncle.
