Tigliole

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,734 · Postal code: 14016

The name first appears in 974, as Teliolas, among the lands the emperor gave the bishop of Asti; but it must have stood where Tigliolette is today. In the eleventh century it was Teglole inferiores, as against Teglole superiores further uphill, where the village sits: those turn up in 1041 among the bishop of Pavia's goods.

The two communities grew apart until the lower one was abandoned, leaving one name. In 1577 the last count of Montafia died without a male heir: the pope seized the fief and gave it to an abbot governor, and Tigliole passed to the Holy See. The parish church of Saints John and Lawrence, in bare brick, faces the cobbled square.
