Piea

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 612 · Postal code: 14020

The name comes from Vulgar Latin plagia, «sloping ground», through piagga, which in Piedmontese gives Piea; a second reading takes it from the Pleya, the first feudal lords, so the village may have named them. The present form only appears from the early fifteenth century. Its 890 hectares of hills hold scattered farmsteads and the hamlets of Primparino, Vallunga and San Grato.

The castle, begun soon after the year one thousand, lost its bastions in the eighteenth century and became the Roero counts' residence. On the front of the parish church, of the late sixteenth century, the dedication to the apostles Philip and James and to Mary Mother of God is cut in Latin.
