Cunico

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 528 · Postal code: 14026

Cunico sits on a hill at the north-western end of the Monferrato, with ten more hamlets across the ridges and valleys. The Roman road from Hasta, today's Asti, to Industria on the Po passed this way: the village probably began as a staging post where the cemetery now stands, and Roman building material kept turning up there until recently.

In 1014 Emperor Henry II seized the lands of Cunico's lords, who had backed Arduin, king of Italy, and gave them to Leo, bishop of Vercelli. In 1462 the Miroglio family granted the village its statutes, kept in the municipal archive; of the castle on the hill behind the parish church nothing is left.
