Feast of Saint Lawrence
📅 Every year, on 10 August
On 10 August Montiglio Monferrato, a municipality of 1,687 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates its patron Saint Lawrence (san Lorenzo).
Montiglio Monferrato was formed in 1998 out of three old communes: Colcavagno, Montiglio and Scandeluzza. Scholars disagree about the name: some take it from the Latin Montellus, small hill, others from Mons tilii, the lime tree's hill, since the country here was woodland. On the hilltop above the Valle Versa stands the castle, destroyed in 1305 and rebuilt with underground rooms in the fifteenth century; in its park the Sant'Andrea chapel holds the largest cycle of fourteenth-century frescoes in Piedmont.
Just outside the village stands the Romanesque pieve of San Lorenzo: pale stone blocks alternating with brick courses, a row of small arches on carved corbels, a round apse with one narrow window. Only grass around it.
