Montechiaro d'Asti

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,380 · Postal code: 14025

The name comes from Latin Mons Clarus. In the thirteenth century the people of Mairano, Pisenzana and Maresco left their own settlements and drew in under the castle walls, safer there; of Mairano only the church remains. The paternal great-grandfather of pope Francis and the grandmother of saint John Bosco came from here.

That church, dedicated to saints Nazarius and Celsus, stands outside the village on the Bric San Nazario: founded around 1130, it alternates bands of sandstone and brick on the front and on the four-storey bell tower. When it threatened to fall it was taken apart stone by stone, each numbered, and put back as it was, only smaller.
