Cortazzone

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 657 · Postal code: 14010

The name probably comes from Curtis Azonis, the court of Azzone, its first lord, and the Latin phrase still sits in the coat of arms. The fief later passed to the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, which in 1860 sold it in lots: the feudal economy ended, smallholding began.

San Secondo di Mongiglietto stands outside the village. A document names it in 1041, but the building predates the year one thousand. Until 1660 it stood in the middle of Cortazzone; then the inhabitants moved to the hill where the village is today, and the church was left alone with its graveyard. Shells carved on the front recall pilgrims bound for Rome or Jerusalem.
