Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot
📅 Every year, on 17 January
On 17 January Cortandone celebrates its patron Saint Anthony the Abbot; the town holds the Festa delle Masche in September and the Sagra della Bagna càuda in November.
Cortandone first appears in 896 as villa Curtetundoni: a curtis named after an owner, born on the northern edge of the great woods of the Tanaro basin. Much of that woodland is still there, and the village sits inside it, on the right side of the rio di Monale valley, among maize fields and hazel groves, the local crop.
From the churchyard of the eighteenth-century parish church of Sant'Antonio abate, its late baroque front in bare brick and the four Evangelists by Luigi Morgari on the ceiling, you can see the remains of the castle walls: mined and badly damaged by French troops in 1705, it was pulled down entirely in the second half of the nineteenth century. A little further on the chapel of San Carlo, already named in a bequest of 1626, once stood among vineyards: today it is in the wood.
