San Marzano Oliveto

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,067 · Postal code: 14050

The name honours Saint Marcian, perhaps the first bishop of Tortona, perhaps a bishop of Ravenna martyred there. Oliveto was added in 1862: some say olives once did well here until a frost killed most of the trees; others that it comes from rivé, the slope, the village standing on a steep hill.

From 1886 Methodists out of America made the first converts here; the temple was dedicated in 1897. The community opened a library and a school that took children to the fifth and sixth year, where the public one stopped at the third. A crenellated tower outside holds a bell, perhaps the only one in an Italian Methodist temple.
