Nizza Monferrato

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 10,372 · Postal code: 14049

Nizza Monferrato lies in the upper Monferrato, some thirty kilometres south-east of Asti, in the Belbo valley, in the middle of the vineyards. It was founded in 1225 by people of the area after the destruction of several castles in the Alessandria district, around the abbey of San Giovanni in Lanero; ten years later it was a comune, and in 1264 it joined the marquisate of Montferrat.

In Piedmontese it is Nissa dla Paja, Nizza of the straw: the nickname comes from the habit of roofing houses with dried grass stems. In 1613, governed by cardinal Ferdinando Gonzaga, it held out against the troops of Charles Emmanuel I and in thanksgiving established a procession on the day of Saint Charles Borromeo, still the town's patron. Today it is known above all for Barbera.

Saint Charles Borromeo and the vow of the 1613 siege

📅 Every year, on 4 November

On 4 November Nizza Monferrato celebrates Saint Charles Borromeo: in 1613 the town made him a vow to withstand the siege by Savoy, and ever since the lion defending the cross has been on its coat of arms.
