Baldichieri d'Asti

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,114 · Postal code: 14011

The Roman via Fulvia ran through here, and first-century finds show a settlement already there. The earliest documents naming Baldichieri date from 1041, by which time the borgo guarded the valley where the rio di Monale meets the Triversa. Higher up stood a castle, destroyed in 1553 by French troops.

On the coat of arms the purple-red chief is what survives of the Littorio chief, stripped of the emblems the regime imposed. The old part, with the town hall and the parish church of San Secondo, sits on the hill just north of the newer houses: the church front plays on light and shade, its forecourt a terrace over the old centre.
