Celle Enomondo

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 480 · Postal code: 14010

Until 1862 the village was simply Celle, like other Italian towns; to tell it apart the council added Enomondo, for the wine of these hills. No official coat of arms was ever adopted: the one in use, drawn by outsiders, says the same, a silver cross on red beneath a golden wine jar.

Celle first appears in a deed of 898: the bishop of Asti granted the cathedral canons lands and rights. The statutes of 1444 record an assembly of household heads, a podestà sent by Asti and a moat the inhabitants had to maintain. At the centre stands the confraternity church of San Rocco, white-fronted, with two statues in niches.
