The name may come from an altar the Romans dedicated here to Apollo; another traces it to the botanical term for new shoots. On the heights of the Burcina traces remain of a Celtic hill fort.

From the sixteenth century the village was neglected, and the parish church of Sant'Eusebio took almost two hundred years to finish. Out of that poverty came the coat of arms of 1623: a winged spirit with a weight on its right arm, and the motto Paupertas summis obstat ingeniis, poverty stands in the way of the highest minds. Things changed in 1722, when count Giacinto Nomis di Valfenera bought the place.
